The sage Patanjali who wrote the Yoga Sutras which is the foundation for the Philosophical School of Yoga one of the six Darshanas of the Vedas, speaks to a path of practice which leads to the state of Yoga. The path is called Astanga Yoga or the eight limbs of Yoga. To begin our journey into this incredible system, an understanding of the Yamas and Niyamas is helpful.
Yama is usually translated into restraint but the Yamas are a set of principals or attitudes that focus outwardly on social conduct. These behaviors encourage positive action in the world to which, if applied, will prevent us from planting future seeds that lead to further suffering for others and ourselves. The Niyamas are applications of similar principals but applied inwardly to ourselves, such as purity and self-discipline. These inward practices are needed for success on the Yogic path and in life in general.
Please join Karen for a wonderful 10 - week discourse of the practical application of the Yamas and Niyamas, including Yoga Asana practice, journaling and discussion. Please wear comfortable clothes, please bring a notebook for journaling, and there is a suggested reading of Practical Steps Toward Living the Yamas and Niyamas will be available for sale at Yoga Among friends for $20.
