Basic Beginning Yoga

A welcoming space for students who are new to yoga, or for more experienced students who want to reconnect with the fundamentals. This class is taught in the Vinyasa style, but with special attention paid to alignment and breath. Some classes may introduce students to chanting and the philosophy of yoga.

This progressive 6 week introductory series is designed for students who are new to yoga (beginners) and those who need a stronger foundation. Students will explore the basics of yoga; develop strength, balance, and flexibility; and experience the peace of mind yoga promises.  

In this class you will cover fundamental poses, learn diaphragmatic breathing, focus on grounding & alignment, and begin to practice meditation.

Upon completion of the series, you will be ready to take any level yoga class or develop a safe personal practice tailored to your current age, health, and lifestyle.  

People of every fitness level, from the tri-athlete to the sedentary individual can participate in this course in a safe, fun, and caring environment. 

If you catch us mid-session, you can attend Fundamentals of Yoga as a drop-in on Saturdays from 8-9:10am.

Hatha Vinyasa

A level 1-2 mix of vinyasa flow and static postures. In this class, you will experience an intermediate Interdisciplinary Vinyassa flow practice. You will learn to heighten your awareness to the subtle sensations that arise as you dive deeper into the your own individual expression of yoga.  Although you will experience a vigorous flow, what lies beneath the surface is the attitude of relaxed awareness. You will learn to be mindful of each pose and the space in between. In this class, you will experience a creative sequence combining conscious awareness of the breath and synchronized movement. Restorative yoga postures  are integrated at the end of the class to  come to a deep place of relaxation as we finish the practice.

Slower pace. Focuses on classic postures and correct alignment in the body. Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, Iyengar yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that emphasizes detail, precision, and alignment in the performance of postures (asana) and breath control (pranayama).  

Through the practice of Iyengar yoga, students develop strength, mobility, and stability.  Asana and pranayama are grouped together and practiced in sequence to ensure that students progress gradually by moving from simple poses to more complex ones and develop their mind, body, and spirit in a step-by-step process.

Iyengar yoga often makes use of props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets to aid in the performance of asana.  The props enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimizing the risk of injury or strain and making them accessible to students of all sizes, ages, and abilities.

Meditation can be difficult to do it on your own and finding a meditation group can provide the necessary encouragement for developing a consistent practice. 

During this 6 week class, you will be supported in the process of reconnecting to a place of deep relaxation and inner calm. Whether you are new to meditation or a seasoned meditator, you will feel a real connection with others as we sit together and meditate. 

Every week you will be guided through a different meditation, focusing on breath, mantra, visualization and body scan. These meditation tools with help you continue your meditation practice at home, work or school. Afterwards, you will have the option to discuss and share your experiences about the meditations.

Stretching and mindful breathing for pregnant women and their babies. Designed to reduce the aches and pains that accompany pregnancy, prenatal yoga offers expectant mothers strength and stamina.  

This class teaches special breathing techniques, hip openers, and helps prepare the body to give birth.  Learn techniques to alleviate lower back pain, leg pain, and slumping postures by practicing gentle & modified yoga poses.  

Prenatal yoga is appropriate for expectant mothers at all stages of pregnancy.

Restorative Yoga

Revitalize the body by increasing circulation to the organs and calm the nervous system through breathing exercises. According to the Yoga Sutras, sadness, negative thinking, physical aches & pains, and uneven breathing are signs that our mind is agitated.  We work very hard and we may find it difficult to feel rested and relaxed after a night's sleep.  This is because our minds are actually still working while we sleep and thus preventing us from enjoying deep sleep.  Restorative yoga poses help us learn to consciously relax and rest deeply & completely.

This deep conscious relaxation benefits all the organ systems of the body.  A few of the measurable results include: reduced blood pressure; lower serum triglycerides & blood sugar levels; increase in "good" cholesterol; improved digestion, elimination, & fertility; relaxed muscles; and reduced insomnia & generalized fatigue. These benefits work together to create a more harmonious state of being.

In this class, students will explore the tools that restorative yoga provides, including guided imagery to help reduce anxiety & agitation and improve clarity at the levels of the body, breath, and mind. Empower and give new life to every cell of your body, heart, and spirit.

Faster pace, aerobic. Promotes deep and even breathing. Vinyasa flow yoga is a dynamic form of yoga in which movement is coordinated with the breath, and transitions between postures are seamless. It creates a moving meditation that allows practitioners to be the witness and let go of their attachments. Vinyasa movements are smooth and are dance-like in their flow.

Level 1

For students who are new to yoga or experienced students who want to reconnect with the key elements of yoga. Level 1 classes emphasize breathing and alignment, with some focus on meditation and chanting techniques.

Level 2 & 3

Level 2 classes are designed for more experienced students. These classes explore deeper concepts of yoga, including dristi (eye positions), bandhas (internal locks), and advanced asana postures (including arm balances, half lotus, and headstands). Classes incorporate meditation & chanting.

Vigorous Vinyasa Flow

Vigorous Vinyasa Flow offers students an opportunity to explore more advanced asanas while incorporating breathwork and use of bandhas.  

Students should expect a challenging  class that allows you to deepen your practice by exploring the edges of your perceived limitations.  

Each class is well rounded with rotating emphasis on arm balances, inversions, twists, and backbends.  

This class is suitable for students in good health and some yoga experience.

Yoga for Scoliosis

Wednesdays 7:30 pm

This small group class is for students with scoliosis.  Learn to breath fully; elongate, lengthen, and de-rotate the spine; strengthen muscles, re-align the posture, defy gravity, and address pain through specific asana and pranayama.

Finding A Class 

Need a little help finding a class to suit your style?  

Beginner Friendly:  
Offered at a slower pace these classes focus on the basics of yoga & breath-work. Absolute beginners will love our 6 week series called Fundamentals of Yoga.  For drop in classes, seek options offered at level 1 or all-levels.  Try our drop-in Fundamentals of Yoga on Saturdays, Basic Beginning Yoga or Vinyasa Flow L1 classes.

Mindful Practices:
Bring balance to the hectic pace of the city in one of our soothing classes!  For total relaxation in body and spirit—try our Yoga Nidra and Meditation classes.

Energize, Strengthen & Tone:
Our faster paced classes are athletic in nature helping you build strength, confidence & grace in your body and mind.  Usually offered at level 1-2 or higher —try Vigorous Vinyasa Flow, Vinyasa Flow 1-2, Iyengar 1-2, Yoga for Total Health. Our level 1 Vinyasa classes will prepare you to venture into these offerings!

Healing from Pain & Disease:  Our restorative classes such as Hatha Vinyasa and Yoga for Scoliosis encourage the mind and body to gently stretch and move in ways that encourage healing.  Hatha, flow 1 and any of our therapeutic workshops and classes pay special attention to the structural nature of poses so your body can naturally realign itself in healthy patterns. Yoga Therapy sessions are wonderful options too!

Fexibility & Stretching:  In every yoga class you will have ample opportunity to increase healthy flexibility in both body and mind.  Depending on your mood and intention you may enjoy our faster paced classes like Vinyasa or dive into more relaxing opportunities to practice more seated and reclining poses with longer held stretches with Hatha Vinyasa and Yoga for Scoliosis.

Family Style:  Whether you are a mama-to-be or part of a growing family - YAF is family friendly!  Prenatal classes plus our YogaKids, Yoga for Tweens, and Meditation for Adults and Teens are amazing ways to practice mindfulness, play and exercise with your little ones. Children  Just added -- Yoga for the Special Child!
